Lighting and Colour
Atmosphere - feel, energy around
Mood - how you feel, emotions
Location - where the story takes place
Brainstorm: Colour/Lighting
Picture #1
What's happening: Coraline and her parents are having breakfast in the real kitchen - they look depressed, dull, lifeless
Technique: Light - cold - natural from cloudy window - dull
Colour - cold, dark, washed out, faded, muted - off white, cream yellow
Effect on the viewer - feels boring, don't want to be there
What we feel - boring, dull, lifeless
Director's Purpose (theme) - Sets the mood - the real world appears boring/empty, makes the 'other' world more appealing - looks can be deceiving - isn't actually a bad place to be
Other Techniques (costume, shots, music, setting): Costume - real parents in simple/plain colors
- fabrics in dull colours
Picture #2
What's happening: Coraline and the 'other' parents having dinner in the 'Other' kitchen
- Characters seem vibrant and appealing
- Good food on offer!
Technique: Lighting - artificial - ceiling light bulb
- warm - yellowish tone
- dull - parts of room still in the shadows
Colour - yellow, orange, black palette
- warm - feels safe/ comfortable
Effect on Viewer (feel/think) - happy, wants to be there
- welcoming, colourful, joyful
Director's Purpose (theme) - looks can be deceiving - seems lovely but unsafe in reality
- Makes Coraline feel comfortable - huge improvement on real world
Other Techniques (costume/shots/music/setting) - Costume - colourful, friendly looking, lots of black/red, more fashionable, comfy, warm
